Naxos has released the third installment in Leonard Slatkin’s cycle of Copland’s ballet works with the Detroit Symphony. The latest recording features the enduringly popular Billy the Kid in its complete version, coupled with the one-act ballet Grohg, inspired by the silent expressionist film Nosferatu. Deeming the recording “a compelling issue for anyone who loves Americana,” David Mellor of Classic FM avowed: “As you would expect from Slatkin, a noted interpreter of American music, and his then orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, these are vivid and idiomatic performances of two of Copland’s more fascinating scores.”
