This weekend, Conductor Laureate Leonard Slatkin returns to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. As part of his 75th birthday celebration, the orchestra will perform a new set of variations on Paganini’s most popular melody written by 11 composers with whom Slatkin has enjoyed a close collaboration. In addition to this festive co-commissioned work, which will be performed by a total of five orchestras this season, the program includes SLSO Principal Oboe Jelena Dirks making her first major concerto appearance with Mozart’s Oboe Concerto, followed by Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, a piece that displays the skill of every section of the SLSO.
